Kahoots Pet & Feed is your go-to pet store with various locations all over Southern California and they’re dedicated to treating your pets like they are - part of the family. They truly care about the bond between owners and their animals.

The Problem

Kahoot’s came to our team to rebuild and enhance their company perception – both in-stores and online. With 22 stores in California and zero to minimal online presence, they sought a digital-first agency to prepare their brand for what’s next in the modern business landscape. After taking the time to understand their business through several in-person meetings it became evident what we were important to them. From increasing their brand’s awareness to assisting in business growth and driving more foot traffic to their stores, we were excited about the challenge.

The Approach

After understanding Kahoot’s business, sales, and marketing goals, we developed a strategic plan that allotted for efficiencies in their marketing department as well as consistency for any company-specific branded elements – whether traditional or digital. From developing a consistent look and feel to creating branded specific photography and videography to creating a new source of revenue by creating a custom e-commerce store, our goal was to set up the Kahoot’s company for long-term success.

IDENTITY

After diving into their brand, we realized they wanted to keep their logo and one color in mind, red, but the rest was up for a reset. Staying true with the brand equity they built up over the years, our goal was to build upon their existing identity and create a richer, unified, consistent, and modern brand.

Our goal was to remain consistent and leverage the strong company history. As you walk in a Kahoots store you will quickly notice their retail experience is reminiscent of barns, so we developed an identity based off the paint swatches to represent the iconic red barn color. We used pops of red, wood textures, paper tears, and other natural textures to represent the crafty and country feel of Kahoots.

We kept the color palette simple with variations of grays, browns, and tans that pair nicely with the Kahoots’ barn red. We chose a bold and strong font called Frank because the way it’s soft around the edges makes it appear almost handwritten. We paired it with a body font called Serifa, which we chose because it’s the perfect contrast to uppercase San Serif and it creates a combination of modern and traditional.

Starting from scratch, we set out to create a new revenue source for Kahoot’s. Since their employees are extremely knowledgeable in the industry, they have a kindred and loving culture, and have high-quality pet products, we created a multiple purpose digital experience. From providing the ability to purchase Kahoot’s specific product to providing pet owners with industry advice and store specific information, we needed to develop an elaborate yet clean website for their company that met the growing needs of today’s consumers.

With a more than standard eCommerce website – Kahoots is now able to use  and manage the Shopify eCommerce store with ease. Not to mention, it’s connected to the same Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software they use for supplying, buying, and purchasing inventory at their 22 other physical locations. This allows them to track inventory levels accurately so that they can keep production levels high enough to fulfill orders, without over-burdening their warehouse storage.

With this, they are able to pull reports and see analytics on product sales, see trends in buying habits, and track the associated costs of B2C retail more accurately. We also created individual landing pages for all of the locations – which is great for local SEO as well. Each page also highlights its unique attributes and they also discuss the nonprofits Kahoots supports – a key brand pillar for them. Last but not least, we created a resource center to provide valuable content for their customers. By making the website editable and extremely flexible in the backend they can easily switch out content, imagery, promotions, and manage new and existing products as they see fit.

We coordinated and executed numerous product, in-studio and lifestyle photoshoots for Kahoot’s website, marketing materials, their brand ambassadors/influencers and social media channels. We traveled all around San Diego capturing the true bond between pets and owners. Locations for the first photoshoot included spots around Balboa Park and Ocean Beach. For the second photoshoot, we traveled around Encinitas hitting various coffee shops like Peet’s, Swamis, and Better Buzz. And lastly, we headed to Temecula and the Kahoots’ original location in Ramona to catch the employees and customers in action. We also created Holiday specific content for their brand.

The next step in our strategic game plan was to create brand awareness, drive in-store foot, and online traffic and generate online sales. From creating hyper-local campaigns to targeting individuals based on certain interested and geographic criteria we were able to introduce deals, promotions, and other marketing initiatives to new and existing customers.

Google shopping was the most effective for us compared search because it had great returns. Through installing a tracking pixel on their website, we were able to engage in retargeting initiatives. From looking at abandoned shopping carts and retargeting users we were able to increase conversions. Most importantly, we created a digital marketing process to track, refine, and reflect on which initiatives are driving the most revenue online.
