I’ve been diving into printed photo books to learn from the photography greats. William Klein, New York 1954-55 & Annie Leibovitz, Portraits 2005-2016. I’ve also been slowly reading Rick Rubin, the Creative Act. The writing is slightly abstract but comparing my creative process to his and trying new things has been interesting!

I recently got married to my best friend & the love of my life which was easily the best day ever. Now that this huge milestone for us has come & gone, it’s time for us to focus on the next new goal, together. We’ve really been mapping out what we want to foster in the next couple of years so that occupies a large chunk of my brain right now. Cheers to what’s to come!

I’m constantly inspired by other creatives out in the world. There is an endless amount of talented people who share their craft on a variety of platforms and I’m obsessed with finding it and being inspired by it. I discover something new almost everyday, whether it be a complete A-Z design project, a unique new typeface, or a dope poster design. The creative potential in the world is limitless and that is proven by so many people out there & I love to see it.

I’m subscribed to the Department of Product newsletter and I find it to be a really helpful resource to round out my skillset as a developer and to approach thinking from a product management perspective. They have a subset of the newsletter called “the Knowledge Series” that revolves around explaining technical concepts in ways just about anyone can understand. They’re all things I already have to know as a software engineer, but taking a step back and learning how to communicate these concepts to the team here at Movetic and to our clients has gone a long way in facilitating projects in the right direction and communicating value to stakeholders at every level.

I can’t recommend The Joe Pomp Show enough, it’s a super interesting podcast that hits on the intersection of sports and business, and episodes are pretty short.

The ChatGPT’s of the world have certainly helped make a lot of repetitive and menial task for me way more automated, boosted my productivity, and act as a great resource for debugging problems on things I’m working on, but what happens to the AI craze when a whole generation leans on it too heavily, and stops producing quality intellectual content for it to pull from? Specifically I foresee a generation of early career and junior software engineers leaning on it to get code written too heavily and not taking the time to develop their own skillsets, but then the knowledge base from which these LLM’s pull from doesn’t get much better over time. What happens to the AI craze when the value of LLM’s starts to look like a log graph?

My fiancé and I are planning a wedding, and I’m designing and making everything myself – save the dates, invitations, signs and boards, menus, the website, working with printers to get everything made, etc – and it’s a fun mini exercise in branding. Typically I’m not involved the branding process for any of our clients since I come in at the end to build things and make designs become something people can touch, but it’s cool to see that I’ve been absorbing knowledge from my peers behind the scenes and get to flex my creativity on the other side of the production process.

Lately I’ve been on a personal quest to define certain areas and topics in my life that bring me true happiness and those that don’t. A lot of these include hobbies I love, like reading, drawing, running, playing guitar, and generally expressing myself creatively. With all of these in mind, the big question for me is how can I carve out time to increase my skill in all the things I love to do on a regular, if not daily basis and hone in on becoming the best I can be at all of them. So far it makes sense to practice each day, even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes (hopefully more)… and seems worth doing if I have the rest of my life to look forward to.

I’ve currently reinvested my time into sketching and illustration, something I’ve admired and enjoyed my whole life but never truly dedicated myself to or spent enough time getting better at it. Specifically exploring retro-cartoon illustrations, also known as Rubber Hose style. Now I’m beginning to find inspiration in past sketches I’ve done, new artists online, and time in nature. Relearning a discarded hobby inspires me to find enjoyment again in something I gave up so long ago.
